FireSmart Canada

We have just been made aware of a new website that might be of interest to our members.  It is the website of FireSmort Canada.  As we are surrounded by forest, it would be a site worth taking a look at.  It is at www.firesmartcanada.ca._

FireSmart is living with and managing for wildfire on our landscape.Preparing for the threat of wildfire is a shared responsibility. From home owners, to industry and  government we all have responsibility to lessen the effects of wildfire. Wildland Urban Interface is a popular term used to describe an area where structures and forested areas meet.
Simply put, Wildland Urban Interface is where the urban lifestyle meets environments that are prone to wildfire. By choosing to extend our lifestyle and communities further into forested areas, we become more exposed to the danger of wildfire.
FireSmart Canada helps you understand the potential of wildfire affecting your home and your community.

Waterfront Idea Fair  (7:00)Join the Town on May 9, 2016 and be part of the Waterfront Master Plan Idea Fair! Drop by at your leisure to explore all the submissions and to offer your own insights into the Qualicum Beach waterfront.
Qualicum Beach Civic Centre, 747 Jones Street, Qualicum Beach
Monday, May 9, 2016, Ideas on display from 9am to 9pm
Presentation and discussion at 7pm.

Doctor Shortage Meeting (6:00)The Division of Family Practice will be hosting a Public Information Meeting regarding our doctor shortage in Oceanside and how that shortage can have an adverse impact on our Oceanside community.
Dr Mark Morris who has his practice in Parksville, will make an overhead presentation and will participate in any followup  discussion.
Our doctor shortage is not unique. Doctors are in short supply not only in Oceanside but also on Vancouver Island, throughout BC and Canada as well. The question could be asked that if every one is in the same boat, how on earth do we successfully recruit doctors to our Oceanside community?
We know there are about 4500 people in Oceanside without a doctor - almost 10% of our Oceanside population. There is a solution but only if the community is willing to think outside the box and be creative. It is important that folks attend this presentation.
This is an important issue that will have an effect on most everyone in Oceanside.
The meeting will be held on Monday, May 9 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Center in the Lion's Room, starting at 6:00 pm.

QBRA Comments on the Noise By-law

Mayor Teunis Westbroek
cc: Town Council and Daniel Sailland

Dear Mayor and Council,
The Board of Directors of QBRA has received compelling expressions of concern about the inadequacy of the Town’s Noise Control Bylaw (No 552).

We note that this bylaw was enacted twenty-two years ago and its review and replacement is long overdue. The resolve of Council to replace it, as per the direction that it provided to staff at its meeting of February 1, 2016, is appreciated by our Board.

As you know, the residents of Qualicum Beach--many of whom are in retirement--cherish their right to the quiet enjoyment of their property. We are proud of the reputation of Qualicum Beach as a quiet and peaceful town and believe that this should be reflected in the standards on which bylaws such as this one are based.

We urge Council to ensure that a new bylaw clearly places the onus on property owners to refrain from generating noise that disturbs the quiet, peace, rest, enjoyment, comfort or convenience of their neighbours.

Thank you for your consideration of this recommendation and please advise if our board or members can be of any assistance in reviewing and replacing the Town’s noise control bylaw.
Yours truly,
Bill Adkins, President
Qualicum Beach Residents Association
